La comes from the Spanish word ‘the’ (in the feminine gender) so it would be something like ‘the geeky girl’. This blog started as a space to share what I was learning as a Web Designer, specially about WordPress, but with time it transformed to a space for me to share all kind of things that interested me.
Geek today does not refer only to ‘computer programmers’ as much as it once did, geeks are pretty much people who have a real understanding of a certain topic (e.g. films, music, cars, etc), usually they are totally obsessed about this topic, or it’s just something they think about a lot.
WHO IS LA.GEEK
My name is Maribel, a geeky creative Chilean girl living in Wellington, New Zealand. I am a Graphic & Web Designer and co-founder of CREATIVA Design Studio. I’m also an Illustrator and a Cross Stitch pattern designer.
I don’t know why or how I started transforming myself into a ‘geeky’ girl. May be that my husband is a geeky guy and I have discovered so many interesting things through him that motivated me to learn more about this geeky world. He has been a huge inspiration for me, he is always willing to share new things with me and talk to me about all kind of geeky stuff.
Along time ago I started working with websites, learning HTML and CSS, and using Dreamweaver. I have to be honest and say that I didn’t really enjoy it much, but I did it because I though I should as the next step on my Graphic Design career. And then I discovered WordPress… the web world changed for me, I started learning WP through videos and tutorials from the web and I fell in love with it. Today I have my own Studio called CREATIVA, where I work with my dear friend Vera, providing Graphic & Web Design.
After more than 10 years of crafting, mostly cross stitching, and when I got enough of the classic cross stitch patterns, I decided to start creating my own designs. That’s how Stitch & Design, my own label, was born. Two years ago I decided to take my embroidery hobby to the next level and do something different, so I started working on “Arpilleras”, big tapestries made on Yute fabric and yarn, with designs inspired on Latin American culture. I am working on the same technique used by my favourite Latin American artist: Violeta Parra.
I have the joy of having such a geeky family! My husband is an Internet Geek, he was the one who to introduced me to this wonderful world; my son is 20 years old, a music and sports geek boy, currently studying Pharmacology at Otago University; and my 11 years old daughter is a books, dinosaurs, and sharks geek, she wants to be a Marine Biologists or a Paleontologist when she grows up. A typical evening together is watching our favourite TV Shows , movies and talking about all kind of stuff. Some of our favourites are:
